De’Longhi renamed its coffee machine a computer to circumvent U.S. duties

De’Longhi, an Italian company.tookunorthodox measures to circumvent the U.S. duties imposed on European Union countries on August 1. The manufacturer has renamed its coffee machines as computers.

De’Longhi appliances were automatically included in the list of increased duties, but the company noted that the measure can be circumvented, as it does not apply to appliances that store information, produce results and run programs.

Spanish agency LOLA MullenLowe ended up renaming the coffee machine as a computer, as well as filing all the necessary paperwork. The creative agency also launched a campaign with the slogan: “Hey, computer, make me a coffee”.

De’Longhi’s American website now has two lines in the catalog. So, the coffee machine is €699 and the computer is €449.

On GitHub.you can findLongshot is a command line application for making coffee. It currently supports Bluetooth low power devices based on De’Longhi ECAMs and has only been tested on the Dinamica Plus via Bluetooth.
